The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.

Successfully completing just the AI course results in a PADI Assistant Instructor qualification. When an AI is ready to progress, attending an OWSI program allows entry into an IE to earn a full PADI Instructor rating.

Dive professionals who hold an instructor rating with another diver training organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognizes prior instructor training and provides a path to become a PADI Instructor.

Prerequisites

Be 18 years of age by course commencement
At least 60 logged dives and 100 dives to attend an IE.
Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months.
A medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months
You also need to be an Emergency First Response Instructor, but you can earn this rating during your instructor training.

Required Equipment.
• Mask, snorkel, gloves, boots & fins
• Appropriate exposure protection for pool (approximately 24 degrees C) and open water (dependent on the time of year)
• BCD with low pressure inflator or Backplate/Harness
• Regulator with alternate air source
• Submersible pressure gauge, compass & computer
• Weight system with appropriate weight for pool & open water
• Dive knife or shears
• Cylinder
• Emergency signaling devices (whistle & SMB)
• Slate with pencil
• RDP
• Pocket mask
• Gear bag or bin

All equipment must be well maintained and in good working order.

Ocean Divers will supply all air fills for the duration of the IDC, along with any extra tanks as required. For country, interstate or overseas candidates, weight belts can also be provided. These are supplied at no extra charge. Washing, drying and storage facilities are available on site.

It is helpful to carry a spare parts kit for field repairs and a first aid kit for any unexpected emergencies. We have trained equipment technicians on staff to lend assistance should the need arise, as well as qualified first aiders and oxygen providers. An emergency oxygen supply and appropriate means of delivery is available to candidates for the duration of the program. Floats, flags and lines are also supplied.
